From RetroTech, the online museum of 20th century technology.
This refrigerator was sold by the General Electric Company beginning in 1927. This model was called the "monitor top" and was the first affordable electric-powered refrigerator sold for home use. It cost $300 in 1927, equivalent to about $3,000 in today's dollars. Families often leased this model from electric utility companies for about $10 per month, or the equivalent of $100 today. The "monitor top" refrigerator was sold until 1936, and used either sulfur dioxide or methyl formate as its refrigerant.
